Still Life Charcoal Drawing
|
Process
Drawing One:
For my first drawing I wanted to get acquainted with, and know what vine charcoal felt like, as well as how it was used. I did this in a number of ways from drawing the outlines of the shapes, to the shadows and reflections that they made. I wanted to first understand what I was doing and not make super heavy marks like with the compressed charcoal in order to see how I should use the vine charcoal later on. |
Drawing Two:
With my second drawing I wanted to then get an understanding of the compressed charcoal, and doing more shadow work to better grasp that concept. I started with the vine charcoal just to lay down the overall lines of the shapes, but then I switched over to using only compressed charcoal. This drawing was done at at later time of day than the first in order to get better shadows with more focused light. I also experimented for the first time with blending the charcoal in order to get more realistic shadows. |
Drawing Three:
For my third drawing I decided to change up to orientation more drastically by stacking the objects and spinning the news print to be vertical rather than horizontal. I did this to try another aspect and give a more interesting depth of feel to the drawing. In this image I also combined and used equal parts compressed and vine charcoal for both the lines as well as the shading. |
